Save the Date: OMG Standards in Government and NGOs Workshop

OMG™ today announced that the “OMG Standards in Government and NGOs” workshop will be held July 13-15, 2009 at the Westin Arlington Gateway in Arlington, VA. This event will combine under one roof three workshops including High Assurance Security Solutions, OMG’s Government Domain Task Force Workshop, and Real-time and Embedded Systems. Also included will be special sessions on Cloud Standards and Green Computing. There will also be demonstrations by major vendors. The OMG Standards in Government and NGOs workshop will include a mix of full and half-day sessions, featured speakers and demonstrations. Featured workshops include:

High Assurance Security Solutions Workshop: This session will feature a keynote by Joe Jarzombek, PMP, Director for Software Assurance, National Cyber Security Division, Office of Assistant Secretary for Cyber Security & Communications, Department of Homeland Security. The morning session is targeted at business/managers and will feature sessions on common problems and solutions, and topics such as Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) and will feature several demonstrations from top vendors; the afternoon session will be more in-depth and technical.

Tenth Annual Real-time and Embedded Systems Workshop: This is a three-day workshop. Software standards for real-time, embedded and enterprise-scale time-critical systems must support stringent resource, reliability, and timing requirements. As with previous Real-time and Embedded workshops, the goal of this year’s workshop is to identify the state of the art and disseminate current best practice in real-time and embedded distributed object computing, for the benefit of standards users, researchers and implementers. Several companies will repeat the successful demonstration of wire-protocol interoperability between different implementations of the Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard held at the March OMG Technical Meeting.

OMG's Government Domain Task Force Workshop: This is a two-day workshop focused on two of the principal areas of standards activities involving industry and government collaboration in the Government Task Force. Day one features an update on the collaborative efforts between OMG and The President’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Notable projects include the Federal Transition Framework and the latest project, the Metamodel for Federal Segment Architecture. Day two presents the OMG’s Records Management Services specification based on a requirements document authored by 19 Federal Agencies, facilitated by the National Archives and Records Administration. Day two will also cover the current roadmap of future OMG Records Management activities while soliciting ideas, comments, suggestions, and participation from attendees. Both days will feature special guest presenters from government and industry.

Special Interest Sessions

Cloud Standards Summit: The leading groups working on Cloud Computing standardization activities will participate. The goal of the Summit is to initiate a dialogue with government IT leaders on the theme of “Coordinating Standardization Activities to Remove Government Cloud Computing Roadblocks.” Potential government implementers of Cloud Computing will supply their feedback on key issues that could delay federal Cloud Computing deployments. These issues will include areas such as security, governance, SLAs, portability/interoperability across Clouds, compliance, legacy systems integration, APIs, and virtualized resource management. At the Summit, standards groups will be asked to describe their future work on Cloud standards and how it maps to the government concerns. Government attendees will be encouraged to provide feedback. Companies working on Cloud Computing are invited to be part of the audience and provide their perspective on the concerns and proposed standardization activities.

Green Computing Think Tank: The GCIO Green Computing Think Tank is one in a series of on-going events looking at ways to improve sustainability for enterprises. This think tank session, Beyond the Data Center: Greening Your Business Processes is a forum for GCIO members and non-members to present and discuss experiences, recommendations and visions on the use of Business Process optimization tools and approaches for maximizing sustainability / greening the business.
