Federal IT Community ISO: Connections, Collaboration, and Differentiation

Study Finds Communication Vehicles Must Evolve to Support the Federal IT Buying Process; GovMark Council to Host Webinar on Jul

GovMark Council, a not-for-profit forum that facilitates education and networking for senior-level marketing executives who serve the government Information Technology and Telecommunications (IT&T) market, today announced the findings of its “Fed Marketing 2.0: Evolve” study, an analysis of Federal IT marketing and communications vehicles from the perspective of both Federal IT marketing professionals and their customers, Federal IT executives. The study provides a blueprint for change, calling on the market’s publications, associations, analysts, events, and vendors to improve both form and function of communications vehicles.

GovMark Council will detail the results of the “Fed Marketing 2.0: Evolve” study during a free Webinar on Tuesday, July 1 at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT. To register, visit: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/463338139.

“Federal IT executives want more direct and interactive connections,” said Nicole Burdette, GovMark Council director of research. “This means less marketing and more communication. Federal IT executives want to participate in the dialogue – to contribute to event content, share comments on published articles, and to engage with peers both in-person and online. The desires expressed in this research underscore the requirement for Federal marketing programs that build community, allowing government IT buyers to connect and collaborate.”

Listen to Me

“Fed Marketing 2.0: Evolve” indicates that both Federal IT executives and Federal IT marketers want greater opportunities to initiate and participate in the Federal IT industry dialogue. Considering specific communications vehicles, study respondents indicated:

  • Events: Thirty-one percent of Federal IT executives and 45 percent of Federal IT marketing professionals want more opportunity for conference attendees to offer input and drive event content. Further, 38 percent of Federal IT executives want to hear more government speakers talking about their challenges and best practices
  • Publications: Nearly half of both Federal IT executives and marketers noted interest in more case studies of successful solutions. Federal marketing executives also want publications to help facilitate a two-way dialogue with the IT community

Inform Me

The research underscores Federal IT executives’ desires for actionable information that facilitates the decision making and buying processes. Further, it identifies a key disconnect between the perceived and actual value of vendor Web sites. Considering various market intelligence sources, study respondents indicated:

  • Analysts: Federal IT executives say analyst insight is critical to their decision making, ranking it No. 2 among their top information sources, and they want more of it. Fifty-four percent of Federal IT executives want analysts to provide greater comparisons of products and services, and 44 percent want analysts to offer more standalone product and service reviews
  • Web Sites: While Federal IT marketers said company Web sites are most important to their success, Federal IT executives rated vendor Web sites ninth among their top 10 information sources. Federal IT executives say more frequent content updates, online help/support, and pricing when appropriate, would increase the value of vendor Web sites

Connect Me

In line with their desires for more opportunities to participate in the Federal IT dialogue, both Federal IT executives and marketers voiced a need for more and better connections with their peers. Considering opportunities for engagement, study respondents indicated:

  • Associations: Forty-nine percent of Federal IT executives and 53 percent of Federal IT marketers want industry associations to offer more networking opportunities, and nearly 40 percent of both groups want more collaboration among industry associations

“Event and association managers in particular, as well as publishers, industry analysts, and editors in the government IT market, should take a look at this research. It can add insight and guidance on how to go to market in the government IT space,” noted Mark Meudt, vice president of communications and marketing, General Dynamics Information Technology, and member, GovMark Council. “This research suggests that a fully-integrated approach to marketing, inclusive of the government customer, is instrumental in clearly defining your brand and building focused marketing campaigns that are composed of a mix of highly resonant communications vehicles. This is the key to providing messages of value in a dynamic, connected Federal IT community.”

Methodology

The “Fed Marketing 2.0: Evolve” study findings are based on an online survey of 154 Federal IT marketing professionals, 100 percent of whom make marketing decisions for their company’s Federal IT programs, and 153 Federal IT executives, 100 percent of whom have procurement responsibility for IT products and services. The survey, which was conducted in April and May 2008, has a margin of error of +/- 4.66% with a confidence level of 90 percent.

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
Data is the fuel that drives the machine learning algorithmic engines and ultimately provides the business value. In his session at Cloud Expo, Ed Featherston, a director and senior enterprise architect at Collaborative Consulting, discussed the key considerations around quality, volume, timeliness, and pedigree that must be dealt with in order to properly fuel that engine.
Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect...

Recently, REAN Cloud built a digital concierge for a North Carolina hospital that had observed that most patient call button questions were repetitive. In addition, the paper-based process used to measure patient health metrics was laborious, not in real-time and sometimes error-prone. IoT solutions exploit operational data generated by Internet-connected smart “things” for the purpose of gaining operational insight and producing “better outcomes” (for example, create new business models, eliminate unscheduled maintenance, etc.). The explosive proliferation of IoT solutions will result in an exponential growth in the volume of IoT data, precipitating significant Information Governance issues: who owns the IoT data, what are the rights/duties of IoT solutions adopters towards t...

Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...

IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...
"Akvelon is a software development company and we also provide consultancy services to folks who are looking to scale or accelerate their engineering roadmaps," explained Jeremiah Mothersell, Marketing Manager at Akvelon, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at 21st Cloud Expo, held Oct 31 – Nov 2, 2017, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...
