Virtualization - Intel Defends Itself to EC

Intel contends that its business practices complained by AMD are wholly within the law and benefit the consumer

CEO Paul Otellini, economists and lawyers in tow, defended Intel against the European Commission's antitrust accusations at a two-day closed-door hearing this week.

Intel contends that its business practices, complained of as anticompetitive by AMD, which has lodged a private antitrust suit against the semiconductor giant, are wholly within the law and benefit the consumer.

AMD also had its say.

Intel is charged with using rebates to exclude AMD from the marketplace to the extent of paying companies to delay or kill AMD products and with selling chips below cost to certain customers.

The Federal Trade Commission and the State of New York are also investigating AMD's complaints and Reuters says both were represented at the hearing.

The hearing, as reported to antitrust chief Neelie Kroes, will determine whether the EC brings formal charges, levies fines or require Intel to change its policies.

Nothing uncovered last month when the EC dramatically raided Intel's offices in Munich and the offices of resellers around Europe featured at this week's hearing. If it found anything significant the EC would broaden its charges against Intel.
