Frank Konkel Joins Government Executive Media Group to Lead Content Strategy for Events

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - April 08, 2014) - Kelly Olson, Senior Director of Events for Government Executive Media Group, today announced the hiring of Frank Konkel as Editor, Events. In this role, Konkel will lead the development and production of editorial content and identify new formats and partnerships for Government Executive Media Group's events business.

"I am delighted that we are able to bring such a talent as Frank onboard," said Mrs. Olson. "Frank is a journalist who is built for the new era of media and his understanding of technology and other key issues in the federal space will serve us well in creating engaging, highly-useful editorial events for our government audiences."

At Government Executive Media Group, Konkel will oversee and drive events content strategy across its government and defense brands, including Government Executive, Nextgov and Defense One, all of which hold market-leading positions and have fast-growing, tech-savvy audiences. Konkel is joining at a time of rapid growth -- fueled by increasing demand from companies seeking to engage federal decision makers, Government Executive Media Group's events revenue is on track to increase by over 50% in 2014.

"I'm excited to be part of Government Executive Media Group," said Konkel. "Its combination of high-quality digital journalism and innovative, compelling government-focused events make it an exceptional platform."

Konkel comes to Government Executive Media Group from 1105 Media's Federal Computer Week (FCW), where he reported on the government's use of technology, including policies, management strategies and oversight. While at FCW, Konkel broke technology news often through his coverage of pressing government I.T. topics such as cyber-security, cloud computing, big data, mobile communication, policy enforcement and other emerging technologies relevant to civilian, defense and intelligence agencies. Prior to FCW, Konkel served as a reporter for several regional publications in Michigan where he covered government, business and education.

Konkel's first project will be to take over finalizing content for the upcoming edition of Excellence in Government, which will convene the largest and most concentrated audience of federal decision makers in the market. Over 875 federal managers have already registered for the event, which will explore "The Agency of the Future." Speakers announced so far include:

  • Aneesh Chopra -- Former Federal Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Hunch Analytics
  • Beth Cobert -- Deputy Director of Management, Office of Management and Budget
  • Katherine Archuleta -- Director, Office of Personnel Management

Cell networks have the advantage of long-range communications, reaching an estimated 90% of the world. But cell networks such as 2G, 3G and LTE consume lots of power and were designed for connecting people. They are not optimized for low- or battery-powered devices or for IoT applications with infrequently transmitted data. Cell IoT modules that support narrow-band IoT and 4G cell networks will enable cell connectivity, device management, and app enablement for low-power wide-area network IoT. B...
The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, demonstrated how to move beyond today's coding paradigm and sh...
What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure...
Cloud computing delivers on-demand resources that provide businesses with flexibility and cost-savings. The challenge in moving workloads to the cloud has been the cost and complexity of ensuring the initial and ongoing security and regulatory (PCI, HIPAA, FFIEC) compliance across private and public clouds. Manual security compliance is slow, prone to human error, and represents over 50% of the cost of managing cloud applications. Determining how to automate cloud security compliance is critical...

In his session at @ThingsExpo, David Dufour, Head of Security Architecture, IoT, Webroot, Inc., discussed how through the use of Big Data analytics and deep data correlation across different threat types, it is possible to gain a better understanding of where, how and to what level of danger a malicious actor poses to an organization, and to determin...
