Based in Dallas, Health Wildcatters is a spin-off of the Forbes Top 10 Accelerator, Tech Wildcatters. Health Wildcatters selects promising healthcare startups and provides them with seed funding as well as mentoring to prepare them for the challenges of doing business in the highly competitive, highly regulated healthcare arena.

As an industry leader in compliant managed hosting, Layered Tech is able to mentor these early-stage startups on the critical challenge of conducting business in compliance with the data security requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). "Our startups stand to benefit a great deal from the knowledge and expertise that Layered Tech brings to the table in healthcare IT," says Health Wildcatters Co-Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Hubert Zajicek.

Healthcare Wildcatters' First Annual Development Program and Pitch Day

In September Health Wildcatters selected its first group of a dozen healthcare startups to receive seed funding and participate in a 12-week development program aimed at helping the fledgling companies refine their business model, develop their products, and hone their business development skills.

Layered Tech's Chief Risk Officer, Jeff Reich, and Risk Manager, Terry Raitt, served as mentors for Health Wildcatter program participants, guiding the group through questions about HIPAA regulations, what a "covered entity" is, and what sort of controls have to be put in place for storing patient data online. After the main presentation, Reich and Raitt fielded questions from the entrepreneurs. Layered Tech's compliance experts have continued to mentor program graduates who have HIPAA-related questions or concerns.

The 12-week program culminated in the first annual Health Wildcatters Pitch Day on November 20th, held at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas. Each participating startup presented their business idea to the audience of around 400 angel investors, venture capitalists, business leaders, and media members who attended the sold-out event.

Health Wildcatters plans to select a new group of healthcare startups each year to receive funding and participate in the development program and Pitch Day.

Reich sees a bright future for Health Wildcatters and the companies that it grooms. "The healthcare IT space is about to explode," says Reich, citing new government mandates and the push toward electronic health records. "In this environment, a healthcare-focused seed accelerator program like Health Wildcatters can help entrepreneurs turn great ideas into great businesses."

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things').
