Open Networking Foundation Sees Increased Adoption of Open SDN in Asia-Pacific Region

The Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the adoption of open Software-Defined Networking (SDN), has grown its Asia-Pacific (APAC) membership – from countries such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan – to 26 companies. Since July, ONF has added seven new APAC member companies and is supporting its increased presence in the region with the announcement of five new industry education events in December. With the growth of membership in the region this past year, ONF also appointed Daisuke Saso as the director of ONF in Japan.

“ONF has welcomed more than 120 member companies worldwide, and we have been excited to see increased participation in from the APAC region in particular this year,” said Dan Pitt, executive director of the Open Networking Foundation. “We’ve embraced companies from a variety of user segments including cloud computing, e-commerce, and telecommunications as well as vendors. Growth in the region follows our recent announcement of the Beijing Internet Institute (BII) as the first international certified conformance testing lab in Asia, and we expect to see a continued increase in APAC involvement as we build out our capabilities.”

In the second half of the year, ONF welcomed Alibaba Group, a company that has developed leading businesses in consumer e-commerce, online payment, business-to-business marketplaces, and cloud computing, to the membership roster. Also new to the ONF is member company Fiberhome Technologies, a product and solutions provider in the field of information and telecommunications. In addition, ONF forged a strategic collaboration with the China SDN Commission (ChinaSDN), a consortium of academia, industry, and government dedicated to the development of SDN technologies, to increase deployment and commercialization of SDN and the OpenFlow protocol in the country.

Continuing membership momentum in Asia, ONF welcomed two companies from India: Tata Communications, a leading provider of new world communications; and Wipro Limited, a global information technology, consulting, and outsourcing company. ONF also greeted three Taiwan-based companies: EstiNet, a developer of SDN products and solutions; Institute for Information Industry (III), a technology center of excellence, jointly sponsored by the Taiwanese government and prominent private enterprises, for the purpose of strengthening the developments of the information industry in Taiwan; and MediaTek, a fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions.

“Open SDN is becoming an increasingly important topic in Asia for both vendors and end-user organizations alike,” said Daisuke Saso, director of ONF Japan. “As the benefits of SDN come into focus here, ONF is increasing its participation in industry events – the volume of which only further validates increased regional interest in the space.”

ONF is continuing the Foundation’s industry education in APAC through speaking and networking events discussing both the ONF’s achievements to date and general advancements in open SDN. The following are events where ONF representatives will be speaking in December:

  • International Mobile Internet Conference (Beijing) - Dec.3-4, 2013
Dan Pitt will attend, participate in various networking events and meetings, and speak about SDN and carrier-grade IP service.
  • SDN & NFV Asia 2013 (Singapore) – Dec. 3-5, 2013
James Sun, president and CEO of Centec Networks, will provide a full update on OpenFlow development on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 9:10 a.m. SGT.
  • International SDN Symposium Taiwan (Taipei) - Dec. 9, 2013
Dan Pitt and James Liao, CEO and co-founder of Pica8, will speak on multiple panels, addressing topics such as SDN global trends and how to migrate to SDN.
  • Open & Virtual Networking Conference 2013 (Seoul) - Dec. 11, 2013
The event, presented by OpenFlow Korea and ONF, will mark ONF’s first co-hosted event on the Korean peninsula.
  • SDN Japan at Okinawa Open Days (Okinawa) - Dec. 12-13, 2013
Dan Pitt will attend both OpenStack Japan and SDN Japan and will speak at the latter during the two events in the open cloud and emerging technology field. He will participate in discussions on topics that include the expectations of SDN and will visit the new Okinawa Open Laboratory.

With tough new regulations coming to Europe on data privacy in May 2018, Calligo will explain why in reality the effect is global and transforms how you consider critical data. EU GDPR fundamentally rewrites the rules for cloud, Big Data and IoT. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Adam Ryan, Vice President and General Manager EMEA at Calligo, examined the regulations and provided insight on how it affects technology, challenges the established rules and will usher in new levels of diligence arou...
Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is at the core or many Digital Transformation initiatives with the goal of re-inventing a company's business model. We all agree that collecting relevant IoT data will result in massive amounts of data needing to be stored. However, with the rapid development of IoT devices and ongoing business model transformation, we are not able to predict the volume and growth of IoT data. And with the lack of IoT history, traditional methods of IT and infrastructure planning based on the past do not app...

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...

The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
Major trends and emerging technologies – from virtual reality and IoT, to Big Data and algorithms – are helping organizations innovate in the digital era. However, to create real business value, IT must think beyond the ‘what’ of digital transformation to the ‘how’ to harness emerging trends, innovation and disruption. Architecture is the key that underpins and ties all these efforts together. In the digital age, it’s important to invest in architecture, extend the enterprise footprint to the cl...

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. Commonly, that network includes the Internet, over which there isn't any real control for performance and availability. Or is there? The current state of the art for Big Data analytics, as applied to network telemetry, offers new opportunities for improving and assuring operational integrity. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Frey, Vice President of S...
