Tod Nielsen, whose name is probably more recognized because of his dozen years at Microsoft than his recent turns at VMware, Borland or Oracle, is now CEO of Heroku, the cloud application development platform that’s part of saleforce.com thanks tom its $212 million acquisition in 2010.
Lately he’s been part of Pivotal Labs, the venture created from EMC and VMware that includes Cloud Foundry, a PaaS rival to Heroku, which hasn’t had a CEO or a CEO stand-in since September when Byron Sebastian left.
Before that he was chief operating officer and co-president running the application platform group at VMware.
Topd Nielsen, right, visited the SYS-CON Media offices in 2005
He has 25 years of experience leading and growing developer-facing businesses and is a natural for the Heroku job, which reports to George Hu, COO of salesforce.
On getting the job he said, “Heroku defined what it means for developers to be highly productive and achieve friction-free deployment for the cloud.” He needs to make sure it’s not mistaken for the more effete Force.com.
At Microsoft his roles included general manager of database and developer tools and VP of its Platform Group.
Heroku has enabled hundreds of thousands of developers to build and run more than four million applications – all entirely in the cloud, without the need to buy or maintain any servers or software.
