  • IBM announced that it's acquiring SoftLayer Technologies in order to strengthen its position in the cloud computing market, according to this PCMag article. SoftLayer serves 21,000 customers and has 13 data centers in the United States, Amsterdam and Singapore. The acquisition will help IBM compete against other cloud providers like Amazon.

  • A report by Morgan Stanley predicts that Amazon Web Services will have annual revenue of $24 billion by 2022 and will be the go-to provider within the public cloud space, according to this Talkin’ Cloud article. In this InfoWorld blog, David Linthicum weighs in on what this means for traditional IT.

  • A survey by PwC reveals that Indian firms are heavily investing in social networks, mobile, analytics, and cloud computing, according to this InformationWeek.in article. The percentage of Indian companies investing in these technology areas surpasses the global average.

There are some real issues that can tangle you up in the cloud. But they may not be the obvious ones. Your organization could be hit hard if you get caught up on cloud myths rather than relevant challenges and opportunities.

Let's start with security and privacy. Though they garner a lot of headlines they are not the quite the obstacle they were built up to be, especially in Europe. Compare this unfounded fear with our recent study of 542 global organizations in the U.S. and Europe. Security is often highlighted as the biggest inhibitor of cloud computing, but some 98% of cloud users said it either met or exceeded their expectations for enhanced security. The same percentage said the cloud resulted in superior IT performance, scalability, and resiliency. Almost a third credited the fact that "security has been less of an issue than originally thought" as one of the primary reasons for their success. Read the full article.
