Tech Council of Maryland Conference to Tackle Hot Cyber Security Issues on October 9

Half-Day Event Features Panel Discussions and Keynote Speeches From NIST Director and Former Cyber Security Coordinator for Obama Administration

ROCKVILLE, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 09/17/12 -- The Tech Council of Maryland (TCM), Maryland's largest technology trade association with more than 400 life science and technology members employing more than 200,000 in the region, will host a half-day Cyber Security Conference on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, to address many of the critical issues shaping the future of cyber security and give attendees an opportunity to learn how to expand their business in this ever-changing sector. Joining TCM for this event are keynote speakers Dr. Patrick Gallagher, director of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), and Howard Schmidt, former cyber security coordinator for the Obama Administration.

Keynote Addresses
A central feature of the TCM Cyber Security Conference will be the keynote addresses by Gallagher and Schmidt:

  • "NIST: Working with Industry to Solve Today's Cybersecurity Challenges" -- NIST has been partnering with industry to address cyber challenges for more than 35 years, and in February 2012 a new partnership was formed with the State of Maryland and Montgomery County to establish the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence, a public/private collaboration for accelerating the widespread adoption of integrated cybersecurity tools and technologies. This center is a natural outgrowth of NIST's previous cybersecurity work with industry and government partners. It will serve as a hub where NIST can bring together the best minds from industry, academia and government under one roof and provide them with the best tools to create and test solutions that will make the cyber landscape safer and more secure. In his remarks, Dr. Gallagher will discuss NIST's vision and plans for the Center and the role industry will play in this unique and new partnership.

    Gallagher was confirmed as director of NIST in November 2009, after working as deputy director beginning in 2008, and also serves as undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology. In these roles, he provides high-level oversight and direction for promoting U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards and technology. Prior to that, Gallagher served for four years as director of the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), a national user facility for neutron scattering on the NIST Gaithersburg campus. In 2000, Gallagher was a NIST agency representative at the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). He has been active in the area of U.S. policy for scientific user facilities and was chair of the Interagency Working Group on neutron and light source facilities under the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Currently, he serves as co-chair of the Standards Subcommittee under the White House National Science and Technology Council. Gallagher earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh.

  • "New Technologies, New Threats and New Business Opportunities: Strategies for Protecting Your Data and Systems" -- Just as technology changes quickly, so do the threats. Schmidt will discuss the strategies, new protections and other factors to consider when faced with these constant changes. Success can be achieved by looking at security from end-to-end, and security must be considered from the beginning in terms of development, deployment and IT operations. Schmidt also will talk about the roles of governments and the private sector, since cybersecurity has significant international implications for everyone.

    Schmidt served as the cyber security coordinator for the Obama Administration until retiring in May 2012. While in this role, one of the leading policy objectives was the development of "National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace," which sought to enable private industry to create electronic identities that can be relied upon in cyberspace, similar to the way that businesses rely on the combination of driver's licenses and credit cards to authenticate identities. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Schmidt served as president of the Information Security Forum and president and CEO of R & H Security Consulting LLC, which he founded in May 2005. He was also the international president of the Information Systems Security Association and served on the boards of Codenomicon, Fortify Software and the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC). In October 2008 he was named one of the 50 most influential people in business IT by readers and editors of Baseline Magazine.

In addition to the keynote addresses, the conference will have two 45-minute panel discussions:

  • Cyber Defense: Protection from Emerging Threats and Concerns -- Moderated by Josh Bryan, Director, Mid-Atlantic area at CDW, this panel will feature James Foster, senior security engineer with CDW; Casey O'Brien, director of CyberWatch; Michael P. Binko, president and CEO of kloudtrack.

  • The Business of Cyber Defense: How it Affects Your Bottom Line -- Moderated by Rick Doten, vice president of Cybersecurity at DMI, this panel will include Adrian Sinclair, CISM/CISA/CISSP, NSA Special Programs Office; Lawrence Hale, director of the Office of Strategic Solutions and Security Services in the GSA's Federal Acquisition Service.
