Dell Sees the Writing on the Screen

Dell expands services to the cloud

The coverage of Cloud Computing gets ever wider, as reported, Apr 2, 2012, in PCWorld.

Dell is in the process of acquiring Wyse Technology, a leader in cloud computing and desktop virtualization. This acquisition is yet another definite sign that the conception of what a PC is no longer holds, but is rapidly evolving. This evolution of the PC, for those of us able to recall the days of dummy terminals, almost feels like going backwards. But, of course, it is a loose association comparing dummy terminal days to the smart phone world of today, yet it is a handy illustration in which to wrap our minds around these relatively abstract concepts.

Once upon a time, not too very long ago, there existed the dummy terminal powered by the monster mainframe computer. The interface devices of monitor and keyboard, found their life and function through the network connection to an on site mainframe. The mainframe was the powerhouse, centralized in one location, housing all the stuff (data, programs, etc.) that we have come to think of as residing inside our own individual home computers. But "The Times They Are a-Changin", as the Dylan lyrics go.

What does this mean for the future? One thing it means is the convenience of remote desktop capabilities. That is the good news. The bad news is the ever increasing threat to the security of our information. A case in point is the recent security breach for cardholders of Visa and Master Card. I don't know about you, but the news sent a chilly tingle down my spine.

Let us celebrate the wonderful ease with which our beloved data of music, books and photos transmits seamlessly from device to device, but be wary, for with all good things comes a price.

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. This is often especially true in financial services, where the legacy environment is many times unable to keep up with the rapidly shifting demands of the consumer. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
The standardization of container runtimes and images has sparked the creation of an almost overwhelming number of new open source projects that build on and otherwise work with these specifications. Of course, there's Kubernetes, which orchestrates and manages collections of containers. It was one of the first and best-known examples of projects that make containers truly useful for production use. However, more recently, the container ecosystem has truly exploded. A service mesh like Istio addr...

To Really Work for Enterprises, MultiCloud Adoption Requires Far Better and Inclusive Cloud Monitoring and Cost Management … But How? Overwhelmingly, even as enterprises have adopted cloud computing and are expanding to multi-cloud computing, IT leaders remain concerned about how to monitor, manage and control costs across hybrid and multi-cloud deployments.
