Another Business Application Moves to the Cloud: Video Conferencing

Nefsis Announces New Servers in India, Cites Worldwide Service, Millions of Conferencing Minutes and Customers Spanning 24 Countries as Proof-Points for Moving to the Cloud

SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/17/10 -- Online video conferencing services innovator Nefsis® announced today that it has activated multiple servers in India, Singapore and other countries in the greater Asia-Pacific region offering its online services to these countries and multinational customers with operations in India and the Far East. The acceptance of cloud computing in business and affordable webcams are driving video conferencing as an online service. Nefsis (http://www.Nefsis.com/) cites recently activated regions completing its worldwide coverage, an average of almost one million secure video conferencing minutes per day and active business customers spanning 24 countries as proof-points for video conferencing moving to the cloud. This is in stark contrast to prior years, where there were no cloud-based alternatives to fixed-site video conferencing installations. Today, virtually anybody at a business desktop or conference room can join an on-demand video conference.

The phrase cloud computing generally refers to shared resources such as servers, hardware and software that are provided on-demand over the Internet. A key underpinning is the distribution of workload processing across multiple servers -- the "cloud" -- thus making cloud computing a generational improvement over centralized client/server and mainframe computing prevalent in earlier decades. In addition to being a catchy name and delivery model for IT services, cloud computing offers substantial business and technical benefits, too. The benefits may include performance, scalability, and the simplicity and reduced maintenance of buying complex applications as a simple online service. Google and Salesforce.com (CRM) are well known examples highlighting performance and simplicity. For product categories such as video conferencing, there is the elimination of large, up-front capital expenses, too.

Nefsis brings the advantages of cloud computing to the video conferencing industry, adding multi-core processing and automated bandwidth throttling to make online meetings faster and more pleasant over widely varying connection speeds often found among business users. Now, customers can use any webcam or HD video peripheral -- including a wide variety of conference room pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, hand-held cameras and specialty video equipment -- and click into an online meeting with participants from anywhere in the world. Participants just click on a link; all that is needed is a personal computer and web browser. IT managers and their network users enjoy this capability without the complexity and expense of on-site servers, hardware video codecs and custom switching equipment.

Nefsis activated new video conferencing online services in India and Singapore, thus adding to coverage already available in Australia and other countries in the greater Asia-Pacific and Oceana region. The new services initially went online largely in response to existing customers in Australia, North America and Europe with offices in India.

For example, Nefsis was selected by SOS Online Backup for its conferencing requirements across India, Australia, the United States and other countries. "SOS project teams are distributed, really distributed," explains John Wagner, chief sales engineer at SOS Online Backup. "We're a naturally global company and we're very pleased that Nefsis does all of the heavy lifting in the very important task of keeping our offices communicating with one another. It's a big boost for our internal communication and teamwork."

The large distances across this region, widely variable bandwidth, plus national proxies and firewalls in many territories pose a real challenge to many web and video conferencing services. "Nefsis in-country servers and real-time virtual server assignments optimize roundtrip latency, providing the best conferencing experience possible," said Allen Drennan, chief technology officer for Nefsis. "This is a cloud-enabled feature and a marked advantage over centralized data centers with limited or no route-selection capabilities."

The new regions add global coverage to the Nefsis video conferencing cloud. In addition, Nefsis cites a growing average of almost 1 million video conferencing minutes per day and new customer additions spanning 24 countries worldwide. "A year ago Nefsis was recognized by Frost and Sullivan as the first commercial implementation of cloud-based video conferencing online service for business. Now, with these recent figures in mind, one can see cloud-based video conferencing as a proven alternative. Video conferencing is truly moving to the cloud," added Mr. Drennan.

The company's flagship offering, Nefsis Professional, is a secure video conferencing software-as-a-service (SaaS) application for corporate, government and non-profit institutions. Nefsis Professional supports desktops, conference rooms, webcams and HD video cameras, and includes advanced web collaboration capabilities, such as highlighting over live applications, as a standard feature. Nefsis is Unicode-enabled with 10 language packs including Simplified Chinese, English, Dutch, French, Canadian French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Latin American Spanish. A free trial of Nefsis Professional is available now.
