US Post Office Hops a Ride on NetSuite’s Cloud

The United States Postal Service, which will be lucky if it only loses $7.1 billion by the end of its fiscal year in September, and escapes with a cash shortfall of $700 million and a debt load of $10.2 billion, has come to the cloud in the wake of its FedEx and UPS rivals. The post office is suffering from an advanced case of recession-aggravated electronic substitution and is threatening to curtail deliveries by going to a five-day work week, eliminating Saturday deliveries. Larry Ellison’s other company, NetSuite, said Thursday that USPS shipping has been integrated with its SaaS-based SuiteCloud thanks to the good graces of go-between Endicia, an Internet shipping and mailing ISV that’s part of Newell Rubbermaid’s DYMO Technology Global Business Unit. NetSuite and Endicia, which is bringing its Internet Postage solution to bear, will each get a piece of whatever ... (more)

So is Cloud Computing, after three years, finally coming to the boil? Here, by way of allowing you to judge for yourself, SYS-CON's Cloud Computing Journal brings you a timeline of the trajectory of the Cloud so far. NOVEMBER 13, 2006 Jeff Bezos' Risky Bet - BusinessWeek publishes a cover article on Amazon's "Elastic Compute Cloud" (EC2) - a totally new on-demand, pay-as-you-go storage and computing service launched earlier that year, in August 2006. GEOINT's Future is in the Cloud

Recently, Geospatial Intelligence Forum Magazine asked me for my thoughts on the role of cloud computing in the future of geospatial intelligence. My response was recently published in their December 2010 print issue and online. "In my opinion, Cloud computing is the future of geospatial intelligence. Through the processing, exploitation and dissemination process, GEOINT links data about a specific place to a specific time. The goal of this linkage is to create actionable information, and success is often a matter of having sufficient information technology resources. While cloud computing is not a revolution in technology, it does represent a step change in how IT resources are provisioned, accessed, manipulated and consumed. If leveraged properly, this new approach will greatly enhance our ability to create actionable GEOINT. Cloud computing also represents an ine... (more)

Trends in Federal Records Management

The below is summary of my comments provided on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at the Alfresco Content.Gov event in Washington, DC. In my 27 years of federal service, I've watched the growth in federal records and the implementation of new executive orders and regulations aimed at improving records management across the federal space. There are immense challenges associated with litigation, review and release, tracing factual evidence for analysis, managing information legal proceedings, and overseeing a plethora of authorized and unauthorized disclosures of classified and/or sensitive information. Federal records management professionals are true, unsung heroes in helping our nation protect information while also protecting the civil liberties and privacy of our nation's citizens. The job has become increasingly more difficult in today's era of "big data."  Records m... (more)

/C O R R E C T I O N -- The Philanthropy Roundtable/

In the news release, Private Foundation Assets Are Not Public Dollars, issued 18-Jun-2009 by The Philanthropy Roundtable over PR Newswire, we are advised by the organization that the first paragraph, second sentence, should read "The report, How Public Is Private Philanthropy? Additionally, the third paragraph, first sentence should be replaced with the following: "Brody and Tyler demonstrate that it is deeply problematic to consider that the federal tax exemption and the charitable tax deduction render philanthropic assets public money."
